Finnish Literary Research Society
The Finnish Literary Research Society was founded in 1927. The
Society acts as a coordinating association for literary scholars in
Finland. It advances the study of literature and promotes general
interest in literary research. The Finnish Literary Research Society is
a member of ICLA (International Comparative Literature Association).
Activities
The Society coordinates an annual research seminar and publishes the journal Avain – Finnish Review of Literary Studies.
The quarterly offers articles, essays, interviews and reviews focusing
on literary studies. The Finnish Literary Research Society gathers
together scholars, teachers, and students of literature, and welcomes
new members to join!
Avain – Finnish Review of Literary Studies
The journal succeeds the Yearbook of Literary
Research Society published from 1929 to 2003. The Yearbook was replaced
by the journal Avain in 2004. Avain is a
peer-reviewed quarterly specializing in comparative and Finnish
literary studies. It is a Finnish-language journal but it welcomes
contributions in other languages with a specific focus on Finnish or
Finland’s Swedish literature.
The editorial board of the journal changes annually and is always
based in one Finnish university. In the year 2012 the editors are
Ilmari Leppihalme and Jyrki Korpua from the University of Oulu.
Conferences
The annual research seminars organized by
the Finnish Literary Research Society bring together scholars from
Finland and abroad. In addition to keynote speeches and lectures the
seminars offer workshops and panel discussion on specific topics. In
recent years the seminars have focused, for instance, on the relation
between literary and cultural studies; literature and emotions;
postcolonial theory; nature, culture, and identity; and the concept of
mimesis.
In 2012 the Finnish Literary Research Society also organizes
a conference in cooperation with the Finnish Doctoral Programme for Literary
Studies. The international conference Values in Literature and the Value of Literature will take place in Helsinki September 12 -14 at the House of Science and Letters. For more information see the conference website.
